Outdoor Play Yards
What it is: Fenced outdoor area on the daycare premises. Dogs play off-leash in groups.
How it works: Dogs are rotated through the yard in groups throughout the day. Time outdoors varies by facility.
Pros: Space to run, fresh air, opportunity for off-leash social play
Limitations: Same environment every day, unstructured group dynamics can lead to overexcitement, overstimulation, and elevated risk of conflict — similar to off-leash park dynamics
Play yards give dogs access to outdoor space, which is better than staying indoors all day. The quality depends heavily on supervision, group management, and how structured the time is. The best facilities rotate small groups and actively manage play. Without strong supervision, a play yard can become an unstructured free-for-all where dogs self-organize around excitement rather than calm energy.
